Starting something new—especially something public—often comes with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. For us, creating a podcast had been on our minds for quite some time. We’ve always appreciated how accessible and meaningful podcasts can be, and we wanted to create something that reflects the heart of the work we do every day.

As a team committed to offering the best psychological services Calgary has to offer, we’re always looking for ways to extend support beyond the therapy room. A podcast felt like a natural next step. So how did we get there? Let’s explore the journey to date.

Why a Podcast? The Expansion of our Best Psychological Services Calgary Offerings

Podcasts have a unique way of meeting people where they’re at—whether you’re walking through your neighborhood, driving to work, cleaning your home, or simply taking a moment to relax. They offer connection, insight, and reflection in a format that fits into everyday life.

We’ve seen firsthand how valuable it can be for people to engage with mental health content in these in-between moments. That’s part of what inspired us. We wanted to share our thoughts, knowledge, and perspectives based on our professional training and the therapeutic work we do every day.

Our goal is to make conversations about mental health, addiction recovery, and psychology feel more approachable, relatable, and grounded in real-life experiences. This is just one more way we aim to provide the best psychological services Calgary clients can access—whether in session or beyond.

Striving to Offer the Best Psychological Services in Calgary Didn’t Stop Procrastination, Avoidance, and Fear

While the idea of starting a podcast was exciting, the process of actually beginning it was… less straightforward.

Like many meaningful projects, it came with procrastination and avoidance. When we looked more closely, we realized that fear was at the root of it—fear of the unknown, fear of not getting it “right,” and even fear of being heard and seen in a new way.

It felt safe to brainstorm ideas and keep a list of topics tucked safely in phone notes. We could continue showing up everyday aiming to provide the best psychological services in Calgary as this was in the comfort and safe zone. We know how to be therapists, we’re guessing at how to show up on social media but we do it, but we didn’t know how to be podcasters. (Spoiler alert: We still don’t. We’ll always be learning and that’s a lesson from the process).

These are the same kinds of barriers we often help clients navigate in therapy. And yet, there we were—experiencing them ourselves. It was a humbling reminder of our humanity. We had awareness of the issue, but it still wasn’t ready to shift yet. We stayed playing around in this zone for probably 6-12 months. A secret idea was building but we didn’t have the confidence to start it, nor make it public. Even putting out the intention felt scary because with intention comes accountability. We didn’t feel quite ready for that!

Here was our reminder that growth doesn’t come from avoiding discomfort, but from moving through it. Nothing was going to change if nothing changed. We were getting ready for change to happen.

The Turning Point

What finally shifted things wasn’t a perfect plan or a surge of confidence—it was a gentle nudge.

Our marketing company, The Art of Business, encouraged us to simply explore the podcast software we had chosen after deliberation and exploration. We had taken these private and secret steps up until now (brainstorming, platform exploration and signing up), what was one more? “Just open it up and see what it’s like.” No pressure, no expectations—just curiosity. That small step made all the difference.

Now, let’s be honest, they might have said this before and we weren’t in a place to hear it. Change is all about the magical intersection of timing with readiness. As therapists offering our version of the best psychological services in Calgary, we see this everyday. What might be revelatory for one person is a total dud for someone else. Is it the tool that’s the issue or is it our state of readiness? Sometimes it’s both, but openness and readiness definitely play a part. The Stages of Change is a theory that psychologists use everyday to gauge where people are at in the change process and we were ready for further action. Yes!

Later that same day, something surprising happened: Our first episode was born! What better topic than “Do It Scared.” This inspiration was representative of our journey to get to that first episode and an encouragement to others navigating change and all of the fear, avoidance, and procrastination that can come along with it.

What once felt like a daunting, distant idea quickly became something real. Not perfect, not overly polished—but authentic and meaningful. And that was enough to begin.

The Podcast Journey So Far from Our Best Psychological Service Calgary Providers

What has been our experience so far? Paige Abbott, the Sana Psychological Podcast host, shares about the highs and lower points of the process:

“There’s been a lot of feelings coming up for me throughout this process. I have felt invigorated by coming up with content and recording it. At this point in my career, opening up insight and knowledge feels important and I’m excited to share what I and fellow mental health practitioners have learned about psychology and the human condition.

I’ve been touched (and surprised, though I don’t know why) about the graciousness and encouragement of the community. Fellow therapists, friends, family members, clients, and social media contacts have been reaching out and congratulating us, as well as encouraging us to keep going. People seem to respect and appreciate this work, which means a lot.

The hardest parts have been combating the self-doubt and perfectionist drives that can come up along the way. Reminding myself (and others) that we are showing up authentically has been helpful, especially when you make a mistake with editing, say something in a weird way (I pronounced ‘sarcasm’ in the oddest way I’ve ever heard in one of our episodes) or have doubt about what you’re doing.

I keep reminding myself that I’m doing this for whoever finds value in it, as well as for myself. The process has been one of learning, unlearning, and opening up conversation. I enjoy learning new things and am excited to learn both the technical side, as well as whatever comes up in reflection and conversation.

I don’t check stats. I listen to edit rather than to hear myself (I’m okay hearing others). These ongoing avoidance behaviours are rooted in that self-doubt and I acknowledge that. I’ll continue to work on giving the grace and compassion to myself that I do to others. I’ve come a long way and here is another great opportunity.

I’m excited, curious, and grateful as we continue this podcast project. I don’t know where it will go or who it will impact, but we’ll keep going. Thankfully I’m great at consistency so I have no doubt I’ll keep showing up and doing the thing.”
