ADHD

ADHD Services

Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex condition that can manifest in many ways, contrary to popular belief. While social media is filled with people self-diagnosing themselves, it is true that many people may be living with ADHD and that their symptoms are unrecognized as part of this condition. ADHD can make school, work, relationship, and life performance challenging and difficult. Being aware of what it is and how to properly navigate symptoms is empowering and that is how Sana Psychological is here to help.

Our ADHD Services

Types of ADHD

At Sana Psychological, we can support you and/or your teen in identifying and helping navigate all types of ADHD.

Traditionally, there are three types of ADHD:

  1. Combined Type. This is the most common type of ADHD and is marked by impulsive and hyperactive behaviors, as well as inattention and distractability.
  2. Inattentive and distractable type. This type does not have hyperactive features.
  3. Impulsive/hyperactive type. This type does not have the more classic behaviours of inattention and distractability and is the least common subtype.

There are other researchers, including Dr. Daniel Amen, who believe there are seven different subtypes of ADHD.

Our clinicians will work with you to identify your symptoms, how they are impacting your life, and goals for treatment.

Family members and loved ones are invited to come in to learn how to best support you and/or for their own treatment and to improve their own well-being. Sana Psychological can happily offer Family Therapy for those who want to take a systemic approach to support and care.

ADHD Treatment

At Sana Psychological, our clinicians have experience supporting youth and adults with ADHD. Our approach is strengths and strategies focused; helping identify tools that will help you navigate the symptoms of ADHD and feeling empowered, confident, and effective in doing so.

How Do You Know if You Would Benefit from ADHD Counselling?

Below are some statements for reflection that are meant to informally support you in determining if you may benefit from ADHD therapy. Have a read through the statements and answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ if you have experienced these in the past 6 months.

If you answered ‘yes’ to more than 3 of these statements and they apply to you on a consistent basis, then seeking out some support to explore ADHD may be a good fit for your personal development. The more statements you answered ‘yes’ to, the greater fit ADHD Therapy may be for you at this time.

Treatment Approach

At Sana Psychological, ADHD treatment combines multiple therapeutic approaches, which may include: Psychoeducation, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI),  Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) and more. What this means is that sessions involve a combination of clinical interview and discussion to determine presenting issues, symptoms, and strengths, in addition to some in session practice of techniques as well as suggestions for strategies and tasks to do outside of sessions.

ADHD may lead to exploration or come out of exploration of other issues that Sana Psychological can support you with, including Addiction and problem behaviours of all types, depression, anxiety, anger, grief/loss, self-esteem, and more.

Logistics

ADHD therapy is offered by various clinicians at Sana Psychological out of our offices in Calgary and Airdrie. Technology Assisted Counselling, which consists of phone or video sessions, is also available. Depending on your provider, out of province services may be available. The cost of services and information about direct billing can be found on our Fees page.

Our therapists like to be active and engaged in the counselling process so be prepared for lots of questions as well as reflections, challenges, and psychoeducation along the way. This approach can be tailored to meet your needs and personal process. Therapeutic goals are individualized and customized and can be modified along the way as needed. Sessions come from a place of non-judgment, compassion, and empathy.

ADHD Therapy can be short or long-term, depending on your needs. We at Sana Psychological enjoy cultivating strong relationships with our clients and are always open to connection in whatever way makes sense for you. Our door is always open, even if you have disengaged from counselling for awhile. This way, the counselling process can keep supporting you as new challenges and experiences come your way, rather than learning some tools in a short period of time but not having processing support as you go through life. It is okay if you would prefer a few sessions and then move forward with your life, but it is important to know that you can return for a session at any time to check-in.

Appointments and Free 15 minute consultations can be scheduled online at anytime.

For loved ones

ADHD Therapy is often an individual process but can also involve concerned family members and supports. Family members may decide to come in for their own support, self-care, and/or participate in sessions with their loved one to support them as well as learn some tools and skills for themselves. For family members who are reading this, you may be hoping that your loved one will change and are feeling confused about how to best help them. Truly the best way to help others is to help ourselves, so perhaps it is time to consider change starting with you. It is amazing what change in one part of a relational unit can have on the whole unit.

Sana Psychological is excited and happy to support you wherever you are at in your journey of change and self-exploration.
